Oral Surgery
Surgical care — without leaving our chair.
When you need wisdom teeth out, a tricky tooth extracted, or implant surgery, the last thing you want is to be bounced across the city to a hospital. At Austral, our visiting oral surgeon Dr Daniel Girgis brings the surgery to you.
Why it matters
Leaving a problem tooth rarely ends well
Impacted wisdom teeth can damage the teeth next door, trap food, cause repeated infections, or cost you a perfectly healthy molar. Broken or heavily decayed teeth can become sources of chronic low-grade infection. The earlier we plan a surgical fix, the fewer surprises you'll have — and the kinder it is on your recovery.
What we handle
Procedures we perform in-house
Wisdom teeth removal
From simple to fully impacted — planned with a 3D scan and performed under local, with happy gas sedation available.
Surgical extractions
Broken-down or deeply decayed teeth that need surgical removal rather than a straightforward lift.
Dental implant placement
Surgical placement of implants, including cases needing bone grafting or sinus lifts.
Happy gas sedation
Inhalational sedation for patients who would prefer to feel calmer and more relaxed through the procedure.
How we do it at Austral
A mobile oral surgeon — in our chair, not a hospital
Dr Daniel Girgis has an unusual background. He first qualified as a medical doctor (MBBS, University of Adelaide, 2014) and spent more than five years working in emergency departments before returning to university for his Doctor of Dental Medicine (University of Western Australia, 2020). He then completed 12 months of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at registrar level at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney.
He is the Founder and Director of Mobile Oral Surgery Services (MOSS), a visiting oral surgery team that brings its own trained dental nurses and equipment to general dental practices across Sydney, the Central Coast and Wollongong. The idea is simple: instead of referring patients out to a hospital or rooms in the city, the surgery comes to the practice the patient already knows.
For you, that means staying in a familiar chair, with a familiar front desk and familiar faces — with a dedicated surgical team that arrives on the day, sets up, performs your procedure, and walks you through recovery. It's a model designed around how nervous most people feel about oral surgery, and it works.
FAQs
Questions people usually ask
Do I need to go to a hospital for wisdom teeth removal?
Usually not. Most wisdom tooth removals and surgical extractions can be done comfortably in our Austral chair under local anaesthetic, with happy gas sedation available if you would like to be more relaxed. Only a small number of complex cases need a hospital setting.
Is Dr Daniel Girgis a specialist?
Dr Daniel Girgis is a registered dentist and oral surgeon with a dual medical and dental background — an MBBS from the University of Adelaide, a DMD from the University of Western Australia, and 12 months of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at registrar level at Prince of Wales Hospital. He practises as an oral surgeon. We use that descriptive term rather than "specialist" because of how the National Law treats protected titles.
What is happy gas and is it safe?
Happy gas (inhalational sedation) is a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen you breathe through a small mask. It helps you feel calm and comfortable during the procedure, and wears off within minutes afterwards — you can usually drive yourself home. It is one of the safest forms of sedation in dentistry.
How long is recovery from wisdom teeth removal?
Most people are back to normal activities within two to three days, and eating normal food again within a week. We give you clear written aftercare instructions, stock up your pain-relief plan before you leave, and check in with you during recovery.
Can I get wisdom teeth and an implant done in the same visit?
Sometimes, yes — if the planning lines up. We will talk through the options at your consultation.
