General Dentistry

Looking after your smile — for life.

Good oral health comes from a steady relationship with a dentist who knows you — not from occasional emergencies. At Austral Dental Care we focus on catching small problems while they're still small, and keeping the rest of your mouth the way it already is.

Why it matters

The cost of waiting is almost always higher

Most dental problems don't hurt until they're serious. A small cavity becomes a big filling. A big filling becomes a crown. A crown becomes a root canal. A root canal becomes an extraction. Each step costs more, takes more chair time, and removes more of your natural tooth. Regular check-ups are how we stop that chain of events — quietly, affordably, and usually without fanfare.

What's involved

What general dentistry covers

Everything you'd expect from a family practice — in plain English, at a steady pace, without being rushed.

Check-ups & cleans

A thorough exam, scale and polish, and early detection of anything that needs attention.

Fillings

Tooth-coloured fillings that blend naturally and are built to last.

X-rays & 3D imaging

Modern digital imaging so we can see what's happening between and under teeth.

Preventive advice

Tailored advice on brushing, diet and risk factors — the boring stuff that actually works.

Children's dentistry

First visits, check-ups, and CDBS-covered care for eligible kids.

Gum health

Monitoring and treating gum disease early — before it costs you teeth.

How we do it at Austral

Whole-person care, not just a tooth

Dr Elvis, our founder, trained as a pharmacist before he trained as a dentist, and now teaches minimally invasive dentistry at the University of Sydney. That background shapes how we practise: we look at your general health, the medications you take and your habits before we reach for a drill. Where a tooth can be saved conservatively, we save it.

Because we're a multidisciplinary team — general dentists, a visiting oral surgeon, implant-trained clinicians and hygienists all under one roof — most of what you need can be handled in the practice you already know, without being bounced between referrals.

And because we're a small family-run clinic, the dentist you see on your first visit is usually the dentist who sees you on your fifth, your tenth, and your fiftieth.

FAQs

Questions people usually ask

How often should I come in for a check-up?

For most adults, every six months. If you have a higher risk of decay or gum disease — or if you smoke, grind your teeth or have a history of trouble — we may suggest every three to four months. We tailor it to you.

What does a check-up actually include?

A full examination of your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues (including a quick oral cancer screen), any x-rays we need to see between teeth or under old fillings, and a plain-English chat about what we found and what — if anything — needs attention.

My last dentist said I needed a lot of work. Can I get a second opinion?

Absolutely. We welcome second-opinion visits and will tell you honestly what we see, what is urgent, what can wait, and what we would do if it were a member of our own family.

Do you see children?

Yes. We see children of all ages, and eligible kids can have their check-ups and basic treatment covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).

New patients always welcome. We'll take the time to get to know you first, then your teeth and gums.
